Harberton is now a Take 5 school….we are delighted to have partnered with the Public Health Agency to achieve this.
Take 5 suggests five easy steps to help you feel happy and healthy every day! Think of them as high-fives for your brain and body:
🖐️ 1. Connect
Talk and play with others!
Spend time with your family and friends. This can be playing games, sharing stories, or just laughing together. Feeling close to people helps you feel safe and loved.
🏃 2. Be active
Get your body moving!
Run, jump, dance, or play outside. Exercise makes your body strong and helps chase away grumpy feelings. Find something active you enjoy doing every day.
👀 3. Take notice
Look around you!
Use your senses to notice the world. Pay attention to the colours of a rainbow, the sound of birds singing, or the taste of your favourite snack. Being mindful helps you see the good things around you.
🧠 4. Keep learning
Try something new!
Learn a new joke, try a new drawing technique, or help cook a new recipe. Learning new things is like exercise for your brain and makes you feel smart and proud.
❤️ 5. Give
Do something kind!
Help a friend with their homework, share your toys with a sibling, or help set the table for dinner. Doing nice things for others makes them happy, and it makes you feel good inside, too!
We are continuing to develop the programme across the whole school with the goal being that the physical and emotional wellbeing of each child is supported. The 5 steps can also happen at home too.
Here are a few of the activities we do in Harberton as part of our Take 5 steps:
· Visits from Fitness Freddy;
· Annual Colour Run;
· Weekly PE sessions;
· School counselling service for Post Primary students;
· Student council and the teaching of social skills in class;
· Nature walks and outdoor learning;
· Teaching of new skills (such as independent skills like tying shoelaces or podcasting in Post 16);
· Giving back through supporting charities as NI Hospice, Age NI or Children in Need.
