Rights Respecting Schools

Harberton is a Rights Respecting School.  This is an award that  schools in the UK can work towards with UNICEF, a charity that helps children all over the world.

The main goals are:

  • To help every child feel safe, happy, and healthy at school.
  • To teach everyone that all children have special "rights". These are like rules that say every child should be treated fairly and with respect.
  • To make sure that you know your rights—like the right to an education, a safe place to live, healthy food, and fun time to play.
  • To help you respect other children's rights too.
  • To make your school a positive and kind place where everyone gets along well.

Ultimately, it helps you and your friends grow up to be responsible, confident, and kind people who know how to make the world a fairer place!

In Harberton we have developed a RRS programme to include some of the following:

·       Class Charters in every classroom.  These include the responsibilities adults have to ensure all rights are respected;

·       Special assemblies on rights;

·       Classroom jobs in each room to teach responsibility;

·       A student council to make sure the views of all students are taken into consideration;

·       Supporting charities as a school;

·       Certificates for special achievements or recognising the occasions when students have respected the rights of others;

·       Becoming a Take 5 school and the creation of a framework that helps support the physical and emotional health of everyone.
