This year we are delighted to announce that we will have a Year 8 cohort. These are children who would ordinarily have transferred to Park School but for whom, due to a particular set of circumstances, it has been deemed that Harberton is the most suitable placement for the present time. The Education Authority has indicated that all special schools will be moving towards offering placement from ages 3 – 19 but the existence of a secondary department is not guaranteed. Mr McGlade will keep parents/guardians fully apprised of the situation and any changes that may occur.
The Year 8’s will follow the Key Stage 3 curriculum at a level that is appropriate to each child’s ability. The children’s classrooms and routines will be more on a par with what is expected at secondary level with the learners encouraged to be more autonomous and mature in their approaches, while still offered the support of a high adult-pupil ratio. Furthermore, the Year 8s will be entrusted with roles of greater responsibility within the school and encouraged to act as mentors to younger pupils.
